Herbal Heroes: Using Herbs to Support Mineral Levels
Once I discovered the amazing benefits of herbs, I wanted to study each herb's unique properties. Many herbs are rich in essential minerals that our bodies need.
Why Minerals Matter
Minerals are essential nutrients that play critical roles in our bodies. They help build strong bones, transmit nerve impulses, and maintain a normal heartbeat, among other functions. Despite their importance, we can still struggle to get enough of them through our diet alone.
This is where herbs can step in and offer vital sources of these much-needed nutrients.
Nature’s Mineral Treasures
Let’s see some of the herbs known for their rich mineral content. These can easily be incorporated into your diet, including my favorite—tea!
Nettle (Urtica dioica): Rich in iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium, nettle boosts iron levels and overall vitality. Enjoy it as a tea or add a cooked green to your meals.
Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale): From roots to leaves, dandelion contains iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Roasted and ground, it makes an excellent coffee substitute or a nice addition to salads and teas.
Horsetail (Equisetum arvense): Contains a high silica content, horsetail is a go-to for supporting bone health and enhancing the luster of hair, skin, and nails. Brew it into a strengthening tea.
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa): Known as the 'father of all foods,' alfalfa is rich in calcium, potassium, magnesium, and iron. It's versatile as sprouts, in herbal teas, or as supplements.
Parsley (Petroselinum crispum): This herb is more than just a garnish; it is loaded with iron, calcium, and potassium. Sprinkle freshly chopped parsley over dishes, blend into green juices, or add dried parsley to your herbal tea concoctions.
Red Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus): This herb is highly recommended during pregnancy or PMS and is a good source of magnesium, potassium, iron, and calcium. It is typically prepared as a nurturing tea.
Chamomile (Matricaria recutita): Famous for its soothing properties, chamomile also provides a dose of magnesium, making it perfect for calming nerves and relaxing muscles before bedtime.
Oat Straw (Avena sativa): Loaded with magnesium and silica, oat straw supports a healthy nervous system and promotes robust skin, hair, and nails. Enjoy it as a tea, or add it to a soothing bath.
Incorporating Mineral-Rich Herbs
Brewing these herbs as teas, adding them to your meals, or using them in tinctures are simple ways to enhance your mineral intake. I find that sipping on a blend of these herbs not only nurtures my body but also provides a moment of tranquility in my busy day. I hope they bring you some nurturing, too!
