5 Tips to Balance Your Nervous System

Your nervous system works like a master conductor, orchestrating countless processes that keep you calm, focused, and energized. Yet, in our fast-paced world—flooded with external stressors—maintaining that balance can feel nearly impossible. As a holistic health coach, I’ve guided clients to restore harmony in their nervous systems through natural, time-tested methods. In this post, I’ll share five powerful tips to help you achieve that same sense of equilibrium.

Implement Conscious Breathing Practices

Your breath is a direct link to your nervous system. Deep, diaphragmatic breathing activates your parasympathetic nervous system, which is your body's natural relaxation response. Try this simple practice: inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for six, and pause for two. Doing this for five minutes can shift your nervous system from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest mode.

You can also try breathing and meditation apps. One that I love is Open. Use my code for a free 30-day trial. I’m currently doing their 2025 Nervous System Reset.

Create Sacred Morning and Evening Rituals

One of my non-negotiables is the belief that how you start and end your day significantly influences your nervous system. Instead of reaching for your phone immediately to browse after you wake, consider beginning your morning with gentle stretching, a brief meditation, or a few minutes of journaling. While time constraints or caring for loved ones can make this challenging, setting your alarm a little earlier can help you carve out those vital moments of self-care.

Establish a wind-down evening routine that might include herbal tea, dim lighting (red light bulbs), and disconnecting from screens at least an hour before bed.

Incorporate Movement

Exercise isn't just about physical fitness – it's a powerful tool for nervous system regulation. Focus on activities that combine movement with mindfulness, such as yoga, tai chi, or walking in nature. These practices help release tension while promoting body awareness and emotional regulation.

Practice Mindful Eating

How you eat is as important as what you eat. Sit down for meals without distractions, chew slowly, and taste your food. This mindful approach supports proper digestion and helps activate your parasympathetic nervous system, promoting better nutrient absorption and overall well-being.

Embrace Nature's Rhythm

Spending time in nature and aligning with natural light cycles can profoundly impact your nervous system. Try to get morning sunlight exposure and maintain consistent sleep-wake times. Regular contact with nature – walking barefoot on the beach or simply sitting in a park – can help reset your nervous system's natural balance.
